The theme of the 34th World Youth Day that took place in Panama in January 2019 is taken from Luke’s Gospel account of Mary’s response to God’s call, “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” A young woman from a remote village is the recipient of a joyful announcement from the Archangel Gabriel, that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. The humble and pure heart of the young woman welcomes this divine sign and she responds with faith. In the same way, Pope Francis reminds us how the Lord, the Church, and the world await our answer to God’s call each receives in this life. In his message for World Youth Day, Pope Francis invites young people “to prepare yourselves for our gathering with the joy and enthusiasm of those who wish to participate in such a great adventure. World Youth Day is for the courageous! Not for young people who are searching only for comfort and who withdraw whenever difficulties arise. Do you accept the challenge?”
